I take it you’re a newer reader and you therefore aren’t aware of my dislike for recommending specific sets of headphones. My advice to you is to try Amazon first and read the customer reviews (especially the negative ones), before making your purchase.

Anyway, now that’s over and done with…

A company called ‘Swimmer LTD’ specialize in all things swimming related, with special emphasis on watertight cases for iPods, smartphones and even iPads. They also sell headphones, of course and their site features customer reviews for most of their products.

Another company called ‘H20 Audio’ also makes waterproof headphones and FINIS have a set called the ‘SwimP3’ which, dopey name aside, seems to be rather well-regarded by swimmers. The ‘SwimP3’ utilizes bone conduction technology, which is probably the best way to go if you’re planning on listening to music whilst swimming.

Bone conduction, in case you don’t know, simply bypasses the outer ear and stimulates the tiny inner ear bones (called ‘ossicles’), just as an organic sound would, your brain then interprets this sound exactly the same way as it would if you’d heard it in your ear, only, because your outer ear is not directly being used, you are free to wear earplugs (which some swimmers like to do).

These suggestions are by no means your only options though; there are a veritable ton of companies out there all manufacturing products exactly like the ones you want. So, whilst I can’t give any of them a personal seal of approval (sorry about that), I can at least offer a helping hand. Is that enough, Betty?

The study, published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 adult musicians and 89 non-musicians.
It found a 70-year-old musician’s hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play.
Action on Hearing Loss said all people – including musicians – should try to prevent hearing damage in the first place.

Hearing normally declines as people age. By 60, 10-30% of people have moderate hearing loss. By 80, that goes up to as many as 60%.
Problems are particularly seen in the central auditory processing system, which is associated with understanding speech, especially when there is background noise – often described as the “cocktail party problem”.

But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages – from 18 to 91 – to see how people were affected as they aged.

A team of Japanese engineers are testing a tiny personal computer that fits into your ear, and is controlled by eye blinks or tongue clicks.

As if talking into an almost hidden Bluetooth earpiece didn’t make you look crazy enough, this 17-gram wireless device gets its cues from wearers through tongue clicks and facial expressions, according to The Japan Times. For now, researchers at Hiroshima City University are calling it an “Earclip-type Wearable PC” and are developing it as a wireless device with bluetooth and GSP, as well as a compass, gyrosensor, battery, barometer, speaker, and microphone.

“We have made this with the basic idea that people will wear it in the same way they wear earrings,” project engineer Kazuhiro Taniguchi told the Times.
Following in the footsteps of wearable computing hardware like Google Glass, this miniature machineplanned to launch as a consumer device by the end of 2015 includes a microchip and data storage.

Essentially, bone conduction technology rattles the ossicles in the same way that they’d rattle in your inner ear, it just, to turn a phrase my father is particularly fond of ‘cuts out the middle man’. It really is an interesting invention.

So, as you see, there is no way a pair of earplugs pose any problem at all to your enjoying music or audio content on your Bonephones. I hope this helps. You’ll likely find this method especially useful if you happen to find yourself on a long plane journey and seated next to a disgruntled infant.
