Scientists functioning at the University West of England (UWE) in Bristol, United kingdom, have figured out a way to power a mobile phone with Human pee.
The company have been in a position to charge a Samsung phone by placing the liquid through a cascade of microbial fuel cells. Using this process, enough power may be produced to send text messages, browse the Net and also make a brief phone call.
As outlined by the scientists responsible, the next phase is to fully charge the phone with urine…Presumably cleaning their hands immediately afterwards.
Dr. Ioannis Ieropoulos has worked for a very long time with microbial energy cells; he’s considered an expert in harnessing power from abnormal options. The possibe applications of his work are very interesting from an environmental point of view.
Dr. Ieropoulos said, “We are very excited as this is a world first, no-one has harnessed energy from urine to try this so it truly is an exciting discovery. Using the final waste product as a supply of energy to provide electrical energy is almost as eco as it takes.” Eco-friendly tech is, seemingly, the great doctor’s main area of appeal.
The microbial cells work as a energy converter, they turn the organic substance directly into electricity, via the metabolism of live microorganisms. The electricity is a by-product of a microorganism’s natural life phase, meaning that as they ‘eat’ the urine, they create power the energy that powers the phone. Now that’s what we call ‘pee as you go’.
Toilet humour aside, the team have engineered a world first, as nothing as large as the mobile battery has ever been charged using this process before.
You’ll notice, nowadays, no plans to market this tech on a large scale, but maybe someday we can be signing a ‘P’ mobile agreement, the trick, as they are saying, might be pissistance.
PS – I’m sorry about this one. The task and its implications are amazing. All credit to the UWE team. However, I constantly needed to do one to those ‘And Finally’ type stories and now I conclusively get to. Please forgive me, one and all.
